Static IP >> Port Forwarding >> Maximize uTorrent

Dear Ganesh, I'll give you some details first before I start crying about my internet issues. :P

OS: WinXP Pro SP3
Internet Connection: ADSL 2Mbit
Setup: Desktop PC >> ADSL Modem >> Wireless G Router >> Notebook PC (currently using)
BitTorrent Client: uTorrent 1.8.1 (Build 12639)

I read your uTorrent guide and did the following to my notebook PC:
STEP 1: Static IP - http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm
STEP 2: Port Forwarding - http://www.portforward.com/english/rout ... orrent.htm
STEP 3: Maximize uTorrent - http://www.bootstrike.com/Articles/BitTorrentGuide/

Now my crying begins.

If I set a Static IP in Windows, should I also change the internal settings of my router?

The problem is when I set up the Static IP in the router (with the same info I entered in Windows), I lose my internet connection BOTH in my desktop PC (which settings I didn't alter in any way) and notebook PC. The only thing to get my internet back would be resetting the router.

I still have a more questions, but they would probably depend on this question so I'll ask later. If ever you need more info about the router which could be relevant here, I can upload the PDF manual for you.

Thanks Ganesh. Please save me. xD

you are at the wrong page for static IP, that is for ISP

look for another page where you can assign an individual PC a static IP

Thanks for the speedy reply! :D

I'm currently searching for another guide. I still have other questions though. xD

1) Does SP3 fix the TCPIP.sys issue? Or do I still have to patch it?

2) Does Windows override the router settings? For example, the Static IP?

3) Does uTorrent override the router settings? I unchecked Enable UPnP port mapping but it's still checked in my router.
uTorrent 1.8.1 (Build 12639):

D-Link DIR-300:

4) Do I check Enable NAT-PMP port mapping? It looks like a new feature since it's not anywhere in the screenshots in your guide (which I believe used an earlier version of uTorrent).

1) no you still have to patch it. it is not a issue, just a security limitation
2) you can try
3) if your router supports uPNP (and it is enableD) and check uPNP in utorrent, then you do NOT need to port forward
4) this is for Apple products, not needed for you

About the UPnP, thanks very much. That is most informative. I deleted my manual port forwarding settings. I tested my port and it's still forwarded! Yay! I guess I won't have to deal with the static IP anymore, since it's basically just for my port forwarding settings anyway.

Thanks again Ganesh. Be looking forward for more of your articles. 8)
